“Your Mercy” tells the story of the woman in Mark 5:21-34, who had an issue of blood for years. She tried many forms of healing; yet, could not be healed. She was considered unclean, as she bled uncontrollably. When hearing of Christ and His power to heal, she followed Him.
In a pressing crowd, she reached out her hand and touched the robe of Christ. Immediately, she was healed. Her bleeding had stopped. Christ stood still in the crowd. “Who touched me?”, He asked, as He felt power within Him leave. The woman stepped forward. Christ told her that not only she was healed physically but that her faith healed her spiritually. She was cleansed socially and spiritually by Grace.
Once on the ground reaching for the garment of Christ, now she was standing forgiven and cleansed. The text shares the story of her cleansing in verse 1, being “held up…when on the ground”, being comforted “as pressure gathers round”, being “pulled from the miry clay”, and being “set upon a rock.” Verse 2 shares the inner cleansing she experienced- in every inner doubt and each unhealable wound of the past. In this spiritual change, she knows that her heart and mind is known of God and can be called their own. The piece ends with hope of secure trust in her Healer, with a renewed song and belonging in Him.
Musically, the open chords in the right hand allow for a delicate, flowing melody to be placed between. The piano and violin accompaniment follows the lyrical storytelling, with flowing eighths, rising and falling counterpoint, and echoing in the texture. The triplets which divide “unforsakeable mercy” share what will happen ahead in verse 3. Verse 3 contains flowing triplets which paint the picture of freedom with hope, restoration, and strength found in trusting God.
