“There’s None Like You” is the song of Mary Magdalene, at the feet of Jesus. She washes his feet with her hair and expensive perfume. Coming from a past involving demon possession, she is grateful for the mercy, love, and grace of Christ. Through Him, she has been transformed and living in freedom from her past.
The text tells how there is none like Christ, who is rich in mercy. He gives peace in life’s trials. He is unchanging, though situations may change. He is faithful. Because of Who He is, He is to be praised. In the final verse, the piece focuses on the future of Heaven with the soloist and flute picturing an upward climb. The chorus changes from “You are my praise”, which mentions God in the present trials, to “You are my peace”, which references God as the sustainer of hope and rest, eventually found in Heaven.
Musically, the piece pulses and flows freely, picturing the unending and unchanging mercy of Christ. “Your mercy will never cease” in verse 2 leads to answer verse 3 phrase, which states that His mercy reaches “from the east to west.” This phrase is found in the Scripture, speaking of Christ’s forgiveness of sins, being forgotten and sent as “far as the east is from the west.” (Psalm 103:11-13) The melody varies in measure 75-76, to show the difference Christ has made in Mary’s life. She truly believes that there is none like Christ. Due to this conviction and conclusion, she ends solemnly stating in reverence to the Lord, that there isn't anyone like Him.
