Come Poor and Needy

Project type

Congregational Chorus with Piano Accompaniment

Date

April 2024

“Come Poor and Needy” is inspired from Psalm 70:5, which says: “But I am poor and needy; make haste unto me, O God: thou art my help and my deliverer.” Jeremiah 30:17 tells how though one may be called an outcast, God will restore and heal them. The text leans into teaching and living of Christ in His ministry. He ate with those who were outcasts. He loved and taught those who were “unseen”, women and children. He comforted them. He gave them an identity, found in Him.
The music rests in E minor to show the plea of the text, to come to God regardless of the circumstance. As the piece builds, the piano accompaniment builds alongside. The repetition of the melodic line allows for the congregation to bring focus on the rhythm and timing. Each phrase is three lines long. The small interlude between short verses changes the rhythm, adding in doublets. These doublets focus on the text, making emphasis on the love of God.
